Thought Provoking Story of the Evening

One Saturday Morning: A Story of Two Best Friends

In a quaint suburb neighborhood two boys grew up across the street from each other, becoming best friends by the time they could walk. They went through the same schools together, played on the baseball team together, and went it was time to date, they went on double dates together. When one got a dog, the other just had to have one. When one was home sick from school, the other would fake sick just so they could cheer each other up. They were, quite simply, inseparable.

They would end up going to college together - roommates, of course - fell in love with their respective college sweethearts, and served as best men in each other’s weddings. When they decided to buy houses and start families, they naturally bought houses just around the corner from one another. Before they knew it both had two kids of their own, stable careers, and were quite content with life.

One day, one of the friends decided he wanted to serve his country just like his father had before him and his grandfather before that. Leaving enough money in the bank for his family to survive on in his absence, he enlisted in the military. Unsurprisingly, his best friend joined him.

They went through basic training together and, of course, were placed in the same unit. On the day they were deployed, their families went to the airport, together, to wish them tearful goodbyes. With a last kiss with their spouses and a last hug of their kids, they entered the military for a twelve month tour of duty. Their unit would go on to see the front lines of the war.

Four months into their service, in the middle of a desert road, the Humvee they were riding in drove over an improvised explosive device. The force of the explosion flipped the Humvee onto it’s roof, tossing one of the friends out of the vehicle. The explosion caused the car to crumple in on itself as it landed, pinning the other friend under the burning wreckage. Before any of the soldiers could comprehend exactly what was happening, an ambush attack ensued.

As the soldiers scrambled to defend themselves, the injured soldier, being shielded by his best friend, insisted that his friend take cover and protect himself. He refused. Tragically, of the twenty soldiers in the convoy of vehicles that day, eight perished, including the best friends. Their funerals were held jointly, and they were buried in adjacent plots.

One of the families received death benefits and was able to handle the financial hardships that ensue when a family member passes away. His spouse received a monthly payment for the death of the soldier, while also receiving child support for both children. While times were tough, they were able to survive.

The other family was not as fortunate. They received no benefits, and were forced to use the children’s college funds to pay the mortgage. The money dried up quickly, though, and before they knew it they had fallen into crippling debt. Their home was sadly repossessed by the bank - as were their cars - and were forced to move into a small two bedroom apartment. Their family, and lives, were utterly destroyed.

Now tell me… which family had the gay couple?

It's a tearjerker, but a fantasy. How many "gay couples" do you know who have two children? Or where the "wife" stays home to raise them?

I think it's intended as a moral lesson, like Matthew McConnaghey's closing argument to the jury in "A Time for Killing" where he tells them to close their eyes, describes the agony of the little black girl being killed by the white racist men, then pauses and says, "Now imagine she's white."
